Before that, in late 1942, the few P-38 available equip a squadron of each of the groups 8th and 49th in New Guinea with the 5th AF, and then two more squadrons in Guadalcanal, with the 13th AF.

Australia was the first P-38 with the 39th FS, who replaced the P-39. Back in Moresby, New Guinea, this squadron got 11 wins against only one P-38F lost in the battle of December 27, 1942; two of the victories gained Richard 'Dick' Bong, the future ace USAAF.

Soon appeared the P-38 radar converted with AI to hunt at night bombers that disturbed Americans at Guadalcanal, before there were two P-38F's 6th FS and then touched two P-38J, in 1944-45, getting some operational success.

The 7th AF was located in Hawaii, with its 18th FG originally based on six squadrons, later reduced to four (12, 44, 70, 419th) and sent to New Guinea in 1943, with the 13th AF.
